How Do You Calculate a Quiz Grade?

To calculate a quiz percentage, divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply the result by 100. This formula works when every question has equal value.

You do not need to calculate the result by hand when you use the calculator above. However, understanding the formula helps you check your result and see how your quiz score is determined.

Important: The percentage comes from your score. The corresponding letter grade depends on the grading scale used by your school, instructor, or course.

QUIZ PERCENTAGE FORMULA
Correct answers Total questions
100
Example calculation 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%

This example assumes 18 correct answers on a quiz with 20 equally weighted questions.

01

Calculate Correct Answers

If you know the wrong-answer count, subtract it from the total number of questions to find the number answered correctly.

Correct = Total − Wrong
02

Calculate a Points Percentage

If a quiz uses different point values or partial credit, divide the points earned by the total points possible.

Percentage = Earned ÷ Possible × 100
03

Find Your Letter Grade

Compare the unrounded percentage with the minimum thresholds in the selected grading scale.

EXAMPLE 01
12/15

What grade is 12 out of 15?

Divide 12 by 15 and multiply by 100. Your quiz score is 80%. Check your course’s grading scale to find the correct letter grade.

EXAMPLE 02
18/20

What grade is 18 out of 20?

Eighteen correct answers out of twenty equal 90%. The calculator can also display the letter grade for the selected scale.

EXAMPLE 03
43/50

What grade is 43 out of 50?

Divide 43 by 50 and multiply by 100 to get 86%. If you missed seven questions on a 50-question quiz, the percentage is the same.

PICK THE RIGHT METHOD

Should You Calculate Your Quiz Grade by Questions or Points?

The best method depends on how your instructor scores the quiz. Use the question count when each question has the same value. Use points when questions can carry different marks or allow partial credit.

Use Questions Mode When…

  • Every question is worth the same amount.
  • You know how many questions appeared on the quiz.
  • You know how many answers were correct or wrong.
  • You want a chart for every possible number of correct answers.
Example 18 correct out of 20 = 90%

Use Points Mode When…

  • Different questions have different point values.
  • Your instructor awards partial credit.
  • You know your points earned and total points possible.
  • You need a percentage from a points-based score.
Example 17 points out of 20 = 85%

Remember: Questions mode assumes each question counts equally. If your quiz awards partial credit or uses different point values, points mode usually gives the more suitable calculation. Always follow the scoring rules on your quiz or course syllabus.

PLAN YOUR SCORE

How Many Questions Do You Need Correct to Reach Your Target?

To find the minimum number of correct answers for a target percentage, multiply the total questions by the target percentage and round the answer up to the next whole question. You cannot answer a fraction of a question correctly in a standard whole-question score.

Required correct answers Round up (Total questions × Target percentage ÷ 100)

2090%18290%
2590%23292%
3080%24680%
5090%45590%

These examples assume every question has equal value and the score is based on whole questions. Your actual result may be higher than the target because of rounding to a whole answer.

01

Choose a realistic percentage

Set the target you want to reach, such as 80%, 90%, or 95%. The number of questions required depends on the total quiz size.

02

Round required answers up

If the calculation gives 22.5 correct answers, you need 23 correct answers to reach at least the target.

03

Check the result against your quiz rules

Extra credit, negative marking, partial credit, or questions with different values can change the score. Use the scoring method that applies to your assessment.

UNDERSTAND YOUR LETTER GRADE

How Does a Quiz Percentage Become a Letter Grade?

A percentage shows how much of the available score you earned. A letter grade groups that percentage into a band defined by a grading scale. For example, a course may assign an A to scores above a particular threshold, while another course may use a different cutoff.

The calculator uses the selected grading scale to determine your letter grade. You can edit its example cutoffs to match the rules provided by your teacher, school, college, or university.

If your quiz score falls close to a grade boundary, check the exact cutoff instead of relying on a rounded display value. A displayed percentage may be rounded for readability, but the underlying score should determine the grade.

Best practice: Check your syllabus for the correct letter-grade thresholds. Do not assume that every school uses the same percentage-to-letter conversion.

Common Quiz Grade Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

A quiz percentage is simple to calculate, but the wrong input or grading method can produce a misleading result. Check these details before you rely on a score.

Using the wrong total

Count the questions that actually contribute to the score. If your instructor excludes a question, follow that scoring policy before entering the total.

Confusing wrong answers with correct answers

Check which field you are entering. If you know only the wrong-answer count, the number of correct answers is the total minus the wrong answers.

Ignoring different point values

A quiz with five-point questions and one-point questions may not be calculated correctly from the number of questions alone. Use points earned and points possible instead.

Assuming a universal grading scale

Schools and instructors can use different grade boundaries. Check the scale used for your course before interpreting a percentage as a letter grade.

Rounding too early

Keep the actual percentage for grade comparisons. Rounding the percentage before checking the threshold can change the result near a grade boundary.

Forgetting special scoring rules

Negative marking, bonus questions, omitted questions, and partial credit can change a score. Follow the instructor’s rules and enter the values the calculator supports.

How do I calculate my quiz grade?

When all questions have equal value, divide your correct answers by the total questions and multiply by 100. For example, 18 correct answers out of 20 gives 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%. If questions have different point values, divide points earned by points possible and multiply by 100.

What grade is 12 out of 15?

Twelve out of 15 is 80%. Calculate it by dividing 12 by 15 and multiplying by 100. The corresponding letter grade depends on the grading scale your course uses.

What grade is 18 out of 20?

Eighteen out of 20 is 90%. Since 18 ÷ 20 equals 0.9, multiplying by 100 gives 90%. Your letter grade depends on the selected grading scale.

What grade is 43 out of 50?

Forty-three correct answers out of 50 equals 86%. The calculation is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%. Use the grading scale that applies to your course to identify the letter grade.

How many questions can I miss and still get 90%?

The answer depends on the quiz size. On a 20-question quiz, you need at least 18 correct answers, so you can miss two. On a 50-question quiz, you need 45 correct answers, so you can miss five. Use the target-score mode for your own quiz size.

How many correct answers do I need for an 80%?

Multiply the total number of questions by 0.80 and round up to the next whole question if the result is fractional. For example, an 80% target on a 25-question quiz requires 20 correct answers.

Can I calculate a quiz grade using points?

Yes. Use points mode if your quiz uses different point values or partial credit. Divide your points earned by the total points possible and multiply by 100. Make sure the numbers follow your instructor’s scoring rules.

Are quiz grading scales the same at every school?

No. Letter-grade thresholds vary among schools, courses, and instructors. Compare the calculator’s selected grading scale with the one in your syllabus, and adjust the thresholds when necessary.

Does rounding change my actual quiz grade?

Display rounding changes how many decimal places you see, not the underlying mathematical score. A score close to a grade cutoff should be compared with the threshold using its unrounded value where the grading system allows it. Follow your instructor’s rounding policy for official grades.

Can this quiz calculator determine my final class grade?

This calculator focuses on a quiz score. Your overall course grade may also include assignments, projects, exams, participation, or weighted categories. Visit the grade calculator directory to find a tool that matches your overall grading method.
