YOUR EXAM GRADE, EXPLAINED

How to Calculate Your Exam Grade

To calculate your exam grade, divide the points you earned by the total points available, then multiply by 100. For example, if you earn 42 points out of 50, your exam percentage is 84%. You can then use your school’s grading scale to find the corresponding letter grade.

EXAM PERCENTAGE FORMULA
Points Earned ÷ Total Possible Points × 100

Use the calculator above to work out your score. For a letter grade, select or enter the grading scale that your school uses.

THE BASICS

How to Calculate an Exam Percentage

An exam percentage shows how many of the available points you earned. You can calculate it for a school test, college exam, quiz, practice test, or other assessment with a numerical score.

Follow these three steps:

1

Find your points earned

Check your marked exam or score report to see how many points you received.

2

Find the total possible points

Use the maximum points available for that exam. Do not confuse this number with the points you earned.

3

Divide and multiply by 100

Divide your earned points by the total possible points, then multiply the result by 100 to get your percentage.

WORKED EXAMPLE

You scored 36 out of 40 points

36 ÷ 40 × 100 = 90%

Your exam percentage is 90%. Your letter grade depends on the grading scale used by your school or instructor.

If you already know the number of correct answers and every question has the same value, you can use the same formula. If questions carry different point values, use the points earned rather than counting correct answers alone.

UNDERSTAND YOUR RESULT

How to Convert an Exam Percentage to a Letter Grade

A letter grade summarizes your performance using a system such as A, B, C, D, or F. Some schools also use plus and minus grades, while others use numerical grades or different assessment systems.

To convert an exam percentage to a letter grade, compare your result with the grade boundaries in your course syllabus or school’s grading policy.

A

High achievement

Often associated with strong performance, but the exact percentage required depends on the institution.

B

Good performance

Indicates performance within the B range of the applicable grading scale.

C

Satisfactory performance

Check your course requirements to understand whether this grade meets your academic goals.

D

Lower passing range at some schools

A D may count as passing in some courses, but it may not satisfy prerequisites or program requirements.

F

Failing range

Usually indicates that the score falls below the required passing threshold.

These descriptions explain common grading terminology, not universal grade boundaries. Always use the grading policy that applies to your exam.

04
COURSE GRADE CALCULATION

How Do Weighted Exams Affect Your Course Grade?

Some courses give exams a specific weight in the overall grade. For example, an exam might account for 30% of your final course grade. In that case, your exam percentage contributes only its weighted share to the total.

To calculate the weighted contribution of an exam, multiply your exam percentage by its weight expressed as a decimal.

WEIGHTED EXAM CONTRIBUTION
Exam Percentage × Exam Weight as a Decimal

The result is the number of percentage points the exam contributes to your overall course grade.

WEIGHTED GRADE EXAMPLE

Your exam is worth 30% of the course grade

  • Your exam score 80%
  • Exam weight 30%
  • Weighted contribution 24 points
80 × 0.30 = 24

This exam contributes 24 percentage points toward the overall course grade. You must also account for the other assessments and grading categories in the course.

Calculate a course grade from several assessments

If your course uses weighted categories, calculate each category’s weighted contribution and add the results. For example, a course with a test average of 85% weighted at 40% and a coursework average of 90% weighted at 60% would have a combined grade of 88%, assuming those are the only two categories and the weights total 100%.

Test contribution: 85 × 0.40 = 34

Coursework contribution: 90 × 0.60 = 54

Combined course grade: 34 + 54 = 88%

If your teacher calculates category averages differently, includes extra credit, or uses unweighted points, follow the official course rules instead.

05
PLAN YOUR NEXT EXAM

What Score Do You Need on Your Next Exam?

If you want to reach a target course grade, you can estimate the score required on an upcoming exam. You need your current course grade, the percentage of the course already completed, and your desired final grade.

When your current average represents the completed portion of the course, use this formula:

REQUIRED SCORE FORMULA
Required exam score = (Target grade − Current grade × Completed weight) ÷ Remaining weight

Express grades as percentages and weights as decimals. This formula assumes the remaining portion is assessed using the same target calculation and that no other grading rules change the result.

TARGET GRADE EXAMPLE

You want a final course grade of 90%

  • Current average 84%
  • Course completed 70%
  • Course remaining 30%
  • Target final grade 90%
(90 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30
Required average on the remaining work 104%

A 104% average is above the standard 100% maximum. Under these assumptions, the target is not reachable without extra credit or a change to the grading rules.

A required score below 0% generally means you have already reached the target under the stated assumptions. A score above 100% means you cannot reach the target through the remaining assessments alone unless the course allows extra credit or other adjustments.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT METHOD

Different Ways to Calculate an Exam Score

The correct method depends on how your instructor scores the exam. Use the method that matches your assessment.

Points-based exams

Divide the points you earned by the total possible points and multiply by 100.

Equal-value questions

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by 100.

Weighted exams

Multiply the exam percentage by its assigned course weight to calculate its contribution.

Scaled or curved exams

Use the instructor’s official conversion or curve. A raw percentage may not equal the final reported grade.

Important: Negative marking, partial credit, dropped questions, curves, and bonus points can change the final score. A simple percentage calculation may not cover these rules.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Exam Grade Calculator FAQs

Find quick answers to common questions about exam percentages, letter grades, and required scores.

How do I calculate my exam grade?

Divide your points earned by the total possible points and multiply by 100. For example, 42 out of 50 points equals 84%. Check your school’s grading scale to find the corresponding letter grade.

How do I calculate an exam percentage from points?

Divide the points you earned by the total points available, then multiply by 100. If you earned 72 points out of 80, your percentage is 90%.

What is 80% on an exam?

An 80% exam score means you earned 80% of the available points. For example, 40 out of 50 points equals 80%. The letter grade depends on your institution’s grading scale.

How many questions can I get wrong and still pass?

The answer depends on the total number of questions, the passing threshold, and how each question is scored. If every question has the same value and there is no penalty for wrong answers, subtract the required number of correct answers from the total to estimate how many you can miss.

How do I convert a percentage into a letter grade?

Compare your percentage with your school’s official grade boundaries. Do not assume every school uses the same percentage ranges for A, B, C, D, and F.

How does an exam affect my final course grade?

The effect depends on the exam’s weight and the course’s grading method. For a weighted exam, multiply the exam percentage by its weight as a decimal to find its contribution to the course grade.

How do I calculate the score I need on my final exam?

You need your current average, the completed course weight, the remaining weight, and your target final grade. Use the required-score formula in this guide. Check whether the result is possible within the exam’s scoring limits.

Does an exam grade calculator round the result?

Rounding depends on the calculator’s settings and the school’s grading policy. A displayed percentage may be rounded for readability, while the official grade may use a different precision or rounding rule.

Can I calculate an exam grade when questions have different values?

Yes. Add the points you earned and divide them by the total possible points. Counting correct answers alone may give an incorrect percentage when questions have different point values.

Is my calculated exam grade the official grade?

No. The calculator estimates a result from the values entered. Your instructor or institution determines the official grade, including any adjustments, penalties, curves, and rounding rules.
