Percentage = correct answers ÷ total questions × 100. Letter-grade cutoffs vary by school and instructor, so check the scale your instructor uses.

Complete Grade Chart

The Easy Grader builds a grade chart for any test size from 1 to 500 questions. It lists every possible score with the number correct, number wrong, percentage and letter grade, and it marks your own score in the chart. Change the total number of questions or the grading scale in the calculator above and the chart rebuilds straight away.

Teachers can use the chart as a quick answer key for a whole class. Use the print button to print the chart for the test size you picked. Students can use it to see where a score sits between two grades.

How to Calculate a Test Grade

To calculate a test grade, divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. This test grade calculator does the steps for you.

  1. Enter the total number of questions on the test.
  2. Choose whether you know the correct answers or the wrong answers.
  3. Enter that number. The percentage, letter grade and the other count appear.

If you only know how many you got wrong, choose wrong answers. The calculator subtracts them from the total to find the correct answers first.

How Many Questions Can I Miss?

To find how many questions you can miss for a target grade, work out the lowest number of correct answers that reaches the target, then subtract it from the total. The target grade section above does this for any letter grade on your selected scale. This table shows common targets.

Most questions you can miss and still reach each percentage
Test size90%80%70%60%
10 questions1234
20 questions2468
25 questions25710
30 questions36912
50 questions5101520
100 questions10203040

For example, you can miss 5 questions on a 50-question test and still get 90%. On a 25-question test you can miss only 2, because 23 of 25 is 92% but 22 of 25 is 88%.

How Many Correct Answers Do I Need?

The number of correct answers you need is always rounded up, never to the nearest whole number. The formula is total questions × target percentage ÷ 100, rounded up to the next whole answer.

25 × 90 ÷ 100 = 22.5, so you need 23 correct answers

The next grade box shows how many more correct answers lift your score to the next grade on your scale. If you are already at the top grade, it tells you so.

Easy Grader Formula

Percentage = correct answers ÷ total questions × 100

  • Wrong answers = total questions − correct answers
  • Correct answers = total questions − wrong answers
  • Minimum correct for a target = total questions × target ÷ 100, rounded up

This formula assumes every question is worth the same. The calculator keeps the exact percentage when it picks the letter grade, so 87.5% counts as 87.5% even when you display it with no decimals.

Custom Grading Scale

Letter-grade cutoffs are set by each school or instructor, so no single scale is correct everywhere. The grading calculator starts with an example plus/minus scale and also offers two common scales where A starts at 93 or at 90. Open Edit grading scale to set your own minimum percentage for each grade.

Each grade needs a lower minimum than the grade above it. If a value breaks that rule, the calculator explains the problem and keeps your last valid scale. Your scale is saved in your own browser only, and your scores are never stored.

Easy Grader Examples

These common scores all use the same easy grade calculator. Letter grades below use the scale where A starts at 90, B at 80, C at 70 and D at 60.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use an easy grader?

Type the total number of questions, pick correct or wrong answers, and enter your score. The percentage, letter grade, grade chart, next grade and target grade update as you type.

What grade is 12 out of 15?

12 out of 15 is 80%. On a scale where B starts at 80 that is a B, on the plus/minus example scale it is a B-, and on a scale where B starts at 83 it is a C. Check your instructor’s cutoffs.

What grade is 43 out of 50?

43 out of 50 is 86%, because 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86. The letter grade depends on your grading scale.

How many questions can I miss and still get a 90?

Multiply the total by 0.9 and round up to get the correct answers you need, then subtract that from the total. On 50 questions you need 45 correct, so you can miss 5. On 25 questions you need 23, so you can miss 2.

How many questions do I need right to get an A?

It depends on where an A starts on your scale. Choose A in the target grade box and the calculator shows the minimum correct answers and maximum wrong answers for your test size.

Can I calculate a grade from wrong answers?

Yes. Choose wrong answers, enter the total and the number you missed. For example, 7 wrong on a 50-question test means 43 correct, which is 86%.

Is the grading scale the same at every school?

No. Letter-grade cutoffs vary by school, course and instructor. Use the preset that matches yours or enter your own cutoffs.

Does this calculator work for weighted grades or points?

This tool treats every question as worth the same. If each question is worth 1 point, points earned and points possible give the same result as correct answers and total questions. Weighted categories need a different calculator.

Does the Easy Grader save my scores?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and your scores are not sent or stored. Only your chosen grading scale and decimal setting are remembered on your own device.
